THE ECOLOGY OF HEALTH
Our understanding of dental disease has radically changed with new advances in science. Some of this research is from the human microbiome project occurring right here in Boulder. This research validates the premise that health is about a healthy internal ecology. As an organism we are really a universe of living organisms that are functioning as a group, a biome. No longer should we think only of killing and eliminating bacteria, but rather of supporting a healthy ecology.
Amazingly, we are learning that changes in diet are health-enhancing by changing the micro-flora of our mouth and gut. Using this perspective, flossing and brushing are seen as changing the ecology and terrain in your mouth, helping to restore a balance and health. Alternative medicine practices that have been effective in promoting dental health, can now be understood as enhancing your ecology of health.
